ASUS X101-EU17-BK 10.1-Inch Netbook (Black)
The X101-EU17-BK from Asus is a slim 10inch netbook that seeks to deliver portability and affordability over everything else. However, that does not cause it to cut back on good performance for the price. It is powered by the Intel Atom N435 1.33GHz processor, coupled with 1GB DDR3 RAM and runs on Intel’s on Linux-based netbook-OS called MeeGo. It is a light OS that has all the basic requirements of the average netbook user. Hence you will be able to surf the web, stream online media, playback movies and music and also edit documents and play some games.
The X101 comes with 8GB SSD storage and this also speeds up the boot times and the overall performance of the system. Combined with the efficient and powerful Atom series processor, the OS experience is quite fast and responsive. In case you feel that the storage is insufficient for your burgeoning media collection, Asus has provided the X101 with unlimited online storage at Asus WebStorage (60 days trial followed by a subscription). However, this also means that a fast and unlimited broadband connection would be necessary to make full use of the service.
Features & Specifications:
The onboard graphics processor is quite capable of handling the everyday graphics needs. However, it will likely not be adequate to run graphics heavy web apps, 3D browser games, etc.
The X101 comes with a textured finish on a slim-type lid that makes it look quite good. The keyboard part of the laptop tapers towards the outer edge under the palm rests and has the battery case bulging out visibly at the other end, which in turn provides for a comfortable slant when the netbook is placed on a flat surface. It has an over all minimal design appeal and tends towards a slim profile. The lack of an optical drive and an HDD makes it easier for Asus to achieve.
The 3-cell battery is likely to be just enough to last you through the important parts of your day, including commute. It has Chiclet style keyboard that makes for comfortable typing and is well matched in looks and feel with the large, multi-touch touchpad.
The MeeGo OS has already received some good reviews and ratings and we will not discuss it at length here. It is a task-specific OS and designed to be useful for devices that are low on processing power and screen space. The interface is sleek and modern and it comes with the ASUS App Store where you can download more useful apps. It runs the Google Chrome browser and hence supports the Chrome webstore. MeeGo’s built-in social features also ensure that you will not have to rely on the browser to get the word around.
Overall, this netbook is a good compromise for those who are looking for mobility on the cheap with an interface that is designed for a smaller screen with lighter processing needs. Paired with a mobile broadband connection, this would be a good tablet replacement for many, especially at this price point.
