ASUS Eee PC 1015PEM-PU17-BK Review

The ASUS Eee PC 1015PEM-PU17-BK is a stylish, compact, and efficient 10.1 inch netbook with a 250 GB hard drive and 1 GB of DDR3 SDRAM (maximum 2 GB). Weighing less than 2.8 pounds and being only 1.4 inches thick with a 1.5 GHz Intel Atom N550 dual core processor this netbook is both portable and reliable. The widescreen 10.1 inch TFT backlit LED display is capable of playing media in 1024 x 600 WSVGA resolution with crystal clarity in all types of light conditions. In terms of input/output configuration, there are 3 USB ports, one VGA output (for connecting to an external display), 1 microphone input, and 1 headphones input. The summarized pros and cons below can help you compare this netbook to the competition.

  • Exceptional Battery Life – with most other laptops and netbooks having batteries that only last 3 to 8 hours, the ASUS Eee PC 1015PEM-PU17-BK is far ahead of the competition in terms of energy efficiency with a 6-cell Lithium Ion battery that has a staggering 13 hour battery life.
  • Web Storage Included – this netbook is bundled with 500 GB of ASUS WebStorage for free. When this Web storage is added to the internal storage space of the 250 GB hard drive, the user has direct access to 750 GB of storage space out-of-the-box.
  • Competitive Graphics – the integrated Intel GMA 3150 Dynamic Video Memory graphics processor provides smooth media playback and stunning gameplay in comparison to other netbooks that are lacking in the graphics department.
  • New Industry Standard Bluetooth and Wifi – The ASUS Eee PC 1015PEM-PU17-BK is Bluetooth 3.0 compatible, and its 802.11 wireless card can connect to Wireless N, G and B networks. The new Bluetooth 3.0 operates within the 6 to 9 GHz rather than the 2.4 GHz of Bluetooth 2.1, and is therefore capable of facilitating faster communication between devices.

  • Difficult to Replace Hard Drive – unlike many other netbooks that are somewhat easy to disassemble and perform upgrades on, it is difficult to replace the hard drive in this netbook with an SSD, and doing so would also void the warranty.
  • Double Tap Mouse Functionality – a common user complaint is that the touchpad is automatically configured for double tap functionality, which can become annoying to some individuals. However, this preference can be adjusted within the touchpad configuration.
  • Mediocre WebCam – although it is true that there are many other netbooks that have a similar WebCam, the 0.3 megapixel camera is certainly nothing to brag about. Even so, the WebCam is perfect for video chat and other casual applications.

At under $300 the ASUS Eee PC 1015PEM-PU17-BK is one of few digital devices that is capable of holding a charge for 13 hours, and is therefore one of the most portable netbooks on the market. Despite having only 1 GB of RAM, the energy-efficient Intel Atom processor and the Windows 7 starter system work synergistically to streamline multitasking and facilitate the use of advanced software.
