LG’s X170 Netbook Announced, Features “SmartPOP”LG [NYSE:LPL] has just released a new netbook that goes by the name of X170. It is your normal netbook fare with an Intel Atom processor and average memory and storage. But it has a new feature that distinguishes it from all other netbooks in the market. This feature is what LG calls the “SmartPOP” feature. It allows you to access your phone from your netbook in ways that you wouldn’t expect. The new LG X170 is your average Intel Atom powered netbook on the outset. It is powered by an Intel Atom N550 processor, with the choice of changing it to an Atom N455 processor. You get 1GB of RAM and 250GB of HDD space — both of which are quite common in this space. It features Intel GMA (Graphics Media Accelerator) 3150 for handling the graphics and comes with a 10.1″ LED backlit LCD display. It has a native resolution of 1366×768 pixels, which is pretty good for this segment. However, it has to be remembered that LG is one of the largest manufacturers of LCD panels in the world. So both their phones and computers tend to have really good displays. Same with Samsung and Sony. So on the specs side, the X170 is really average choice. However, it is LG’s SmartPOP feature that really sets it apart. It is a function that allows you to control your phone fully through your netbook. It allows you not only to view what’s on your phone, it let’s you dial in, receive calls and even receive and send SMS. You can sync your phone data with Outlook on your PC via SmartPOP. The X170 is Bluetooth 3.0 compatible, meaning it can be more than just a netbook to you. Not talks of whether it will work with all phones or only LG ones. I would err on the latter option. It is currently being sold in Korea for 630,000 Won (~$699) at base. |
